With stricter social distancing measures on the horizon and the government’s Job Retention Scheme coming to an end next month, it’s an uncertain time for businesses across the country.
With this in mind, we surveyed over 200 UK companies to understand how businesses are feeling about the UK job market during this unprecedented time.
The study reveals that a whopping 88.9% of UK employers still feel confident about retaining staff over the next six months; with a further 85.4% admitting they also feel confident about their hiring efforts right now.
What’s more, 65.8% of employers think the job market will improve over the next 12 months. Interestingly, a further two-thirds (66.9%) of respondents said they felt more confident because of the large influx of candidates entering the job market.
Building on this confidence
While it’s heartening that so many employers still have faith in the market and their ability to retain staff, it’s vital that organisations continue to develop their hiring strategies in order to stay on track.
Have a plan
With government advice around coronavirus constantly changing, it might seem futile to plan ahead. However, it’s important that you take the time to assess your business needs and come up with an ideal hiring strategy, based on the information that is currently available.
Start by looking at where you want your business to be in the next 12 months and formulate an idea of the employees you need to make that happen.
From here you can identify any personnel gaps that need filling, and create a clear plan for onboarding new workers and bringing employees back to work after furlough. Ultimately, this should enable you to understand which vacancies you need to advertise and when.
Having a clear hiring plan means you can still work toward these larger business goals, even if circumstances change unexpectedly.

While it’s understandable that employers feel more confident because of the influx of candidates in the job market, it doesn’t mean you’ll find the right person any quicker. In fact, you may find it even harder to spot that perfect fit. As such you want to make sure you’re attracting the right applicants in the first place.
This can be done by working with recruitment specialists and job boards that utilise machine learning and AI to improve job matches; and push your vacancies to the right candidates. With any luck, this should ensure that your talent pool is full of relevant applicants, rather than time-wasters.
Focus on candidate experience
It’s true that the UK job market has seen a power shift from candidates back to employers. However, that doesn’t mean that a good candidate experience is no longer important.
