Frequently Asked Questions
A Domiciliary Care Worker (also known as a Home Care Worker or Care Assistant) provides essential personal care and practical support to elderly, disabled, or vulnerable adults in their own homes across Plymouth. Your day involves visiting multiple clients, assisting with personal hygiene, medication, meal preparation, light housework, and providing vital companionship. The role is about enabling people to live independently and safely in their community. It's different from a hospital-based Mortuary Porter role or a school-based Teaching Assistant position, as it focuses on one-to-one care in a home setting.
Yes, access to your own reliable transport is essential for this role due to the need to travel between client homes in the Plymouth PL1 area and its suburbs. A valid UK driving licence is strongly preferred. Most of our client providers pay a competitive mileage allowance (typically between 25p to 45p per mile) for travel between client visits, which helps cover your fuel and running costs. This is a standard practice in domiciliary care. Be sure to discuss the specific mileage policy for your potential placement during your interview with our consultant.
Absolutely. An Enhanced DBS check is a mandatory requirement for all care work, but you do not need to have one already. Temporary Staff Agency will guide you through the entire application process for a new DBS check as part of your registration. There is a cost associated, which is typically covered either by the agency or the client, depending on the placement. We will make this clear during your registration. Having an existing, portable DBS on the Update Service is a great advantage and can speed up your start date significantly.
Flexibility is one of the key benefits of working with our agency. Domiciliary care in Plymouth requires cover across seven days a week, with common shifts being early mornings (7am-10am), late mornings (10am-2pm), evenings (4pm-8pm), and some weekend hours. We work with you to understand your availability—whether you're looking for full-time hours, part-time mornings only, or weekend work to complement another role, such as an Office Assistant position. We strive to build a rota that suits your life while meeting our clients' needs.
Care is a sector with excellent progression opportunities. Starting as a Domiciliary Care Worker, you can gain valuable experience and then pursue qualifications like the NVQ/QCF Diploma in Health & Social Care (Levels 2, 3, and 5). This can lead to roles such as Senior Care Worker, Care Coordinator, Team Leader, or moving into specialist areas like dementia care or palliative care. Many of our temporary placements offer the chance to go permanent with the client, providing job security. For businesses looking to build their own care teams, our Temporary Staffing Solutions Guide offers valuable insights.
