Core Responsibilities & Daily Duties

A Construction Labourer is the backbone of any building site. Your primary role is to assist skilled tradespeople and ensure the site operates smoothly, safely, and efficiently. Key responsibilities include:

• Site Preparation and Clearance: Loading and unloading building materials, tools, and equipment. Ensuring work areas are clean, tidy, and free from hazards to comply with strict health and safety regulations.
• Material Handling and Movement: Transporting bricks, blocks, timber, cement, and other supplies to tradespeople as needed, using manual handling techniques or site machinery like wheelbarrows and pallet trucks.
• Assisting Skilled Trades: Providing direct support to bricklayers, carpenters, plasterers, and groundworkers. This may involve mixing mortar, holding materials in place, fetching tools, and helping with measurements.
• Basic Construction Tasks: Undertaking tasks such as digging trenches, laying drainage, compacting soil, erecting and dismantling basic scaffolding (under supervision), and installing temporary fencing or site signage.
• Waste Management: Segregating and disposing of site waste into appropriate skips, promoting recycling efforts, and helping to maintain a sustainable and environmentally conscious site.
• Health & Safety Vigilance: Adhering to all site-specific safety protocols, wearing correct PPE at all times, participating in daily tool-box talks, and proactively reporting any potential risks or incidents to the site supervisor.

Essential Skills & Candidate Requirements

To be successful in this role and secure an immediate start in Middlesbrough, you should meet the following criteria:

• Proven Experience: At least 6 months of recent experience as a Construction Labourer, Groundworker, or in a similar manual role within the UK construction industry.
• Valid CSCS Card: A valid CSCS (Construction Skills Certification Scheme) Labourer card is essential for accessing most sites. We can advise on obtaining one if needed.
• Physical Fitness & Stamina: The role is physically demanding, requiring heavy lifting, prolonged standing, bending, and working in all weather conditions.
• Strong Work Ethic: Reliability, punctuality, and a positive, can-do attitude. The ability to work effectively as part of a team and follow instructions precisely.
• Basic Tools Awareness: Familiarity with common hand tools and a willingness to learn. A full UK driving licence is advantageous but not always essential.
• Safety-First Mindset: A genuine commitment to health and safety. Understanding of risk assessments and method statements is beneficial.
