Job Description: Scaffolder (Plymouth PL1)
We are seeking multiple experienced and safety-conscious Scaffolders to join our dedicated pool of construction talent for a variety of projects across Plymouth. Our clients range from major national contractors working on large-scale commercial developments to local firms undertaking vital refurbishment and maintenance work on Plymouth's historic waterfront and infrastructure. As a leading staffing agency with deep roots in the South West, we specialise in connecting skilled tradespeople with reputable employers who value quality, reliability, and adherence to the highest safety standards.
This role is ideal for a scaffolder who takes pride in their work, understands the critical importance of a safely erected structure, and is looking for consistent work without the long-term commitment of a single employer. Whether you're seeking short-term assignments to fill gaps between contracts or a longer-term temp-to-perm pathway with a top-tier contractor, Temporary Staff Agency provides the platform and support. Much like the essential support we provide for roles such as Domiciliary Care Workers in the community or reliable Caretakers for local facilities, a skilled Scaffolder forms the foundational support for any successful construction project.
Key Responsibilities & Daily Duties
As a scaffolder placed through Temporary Staff Agency, your primary responsibility is to erect, alter, and dismantle scaffolding structures safely, efficiently, and in accordance with all relevant regulations and site-specific plans. Your work directly enables other trades to perform their jobs safely at height.
- Erection & Dismantling: Safely and accurately construct a wide range of scaffolding systems including independent tied scaffolds, birdcages, cantilever, and complex access solutions as per design drawings and risk assessments.
- Materials Handling: Responsible for the inspection, movement, and organisation of all scaffolding materials (tubes, fittings, boards, guardrails) on site, ensuring they are in good condition and stored safely.
- Safety First: Conduct pre-use inspections of equipment and completed structures. Erect safety signage, ensure edge protection is secure, and install debris nets or brick guards as required. Your vigilance is paramount.
- Team Collaboration: Work effectively as part of a scaffold crew, communicating clearly with colleagues, site supervisors, and other tradespeople like steel fixers, bricklayers, and painters.
- Compliance & Documentation: Adhere strictly to SG4:22 (Preventing Falls in Scaffolding Operations) and all other HSE, COSHH, and site-specific rules. Complete daily check sheets and tag systems for scaffolding.
- Problem-Solving: Adapt to site challenges and propose practical solutions for safe access in confined or complex spaces, always under the guidance of a qualified Advanced or Senior Scaffolder.
Essential Requirements & Qualifications
To be considered for these immediate Scaffolder positions in Plymouth, candidates must meet the following non-negotiable criteria. These standards ensure not only your safety but that of everyone on site.
Mandatory Certifications
- Valid CISRS (Construction Industry Scaffolders Record Scheme) Card – either Trainee, Scaffolder, or Advanced.
- Up-to-date CSCS Card (Construction Skills Certification Scheme).
- Proof of CPCS (Plant) or NPORS certification for any scaffold-mounted plant operation (if applicable).
- Recent SMSTS or SSSTS certification is a significant advantage.
Skills & Experience
- Proven, recent experience as a scaffolder on UK construction sites.
- Comprehensive knowledge of scaffolding techniques, TG20:21 operational guidance, and relevant British/European Standards.
- Ability to read and interpret scaffold design drawings.
- Excellent physical fitness, with the ability to work at height and in all weather conditions.
- Strong awareness of health, safety, and environmental regulations.
- Own reliable transport is highly desirable for getting to various sites across Plymouth and Devon.
If you hold these qualifications and are ready to work, the process is faster than you think. We streamline recruitment much like we do for urgent roles such as a Field Operative in DY4 or a Helpdesk professional in Cambridge.

Absolutely. We have a range of clients who require trainee scaffolders to work under the supervision of a qualified scaffolder. It's a great way to gain site experience and build your hours towards your full Scaffolder card. Be prepared to show your trainee card and a willingness to learn and follow instructions precisely.
Our client companies are contractually required to provide all necessary site-specific Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) free of charge. This typically includes a hard hat, high-visibility clothing, safety footwear, and gloves. For scaffolding, you will also be provided with a harness and lanyard where required by the risk assessment. You are expected to bring your own basic tools (spanner, podger, etc.) as per industry standard.
Yes, overtime is very common in the construction industry, especially when projects are on tight deadlines. Many of our scaffolding assignments offer opportunities for weekend work or extended hours, typically paid at an enhanced rate (e.g., time and a half, double time). Your consultant will make the overtime expectations and rates clear during your briefing for each specific role.
Temp-to-perm is a popular pathway. You start working for a client on a temporary basis through Temporary Staff Agency. This acts as an extended working interview for both you and the employer. If, after an agreed period (often 12 weeks), both parties are happy, the client will offer you a direct, permanent contract. We facilitate a smooth transition, and there is no fee payable by you. It's a low-risk way to find a long-term role with a company you like. For more on this model, see The Ultimate Guide To Temp Work Staffing.
Yes, we recruit across the entire built environment in Plymouth and the South West. We frequently place Labourers, Steel Fixers, Bricklayers, Carpenters, Plant Operatives, and Site Supervisors. We also staff professional roles like Site Managers and Quantity Surveyors. If you have skills in a related trade, please register with us and discuss your options. Similarly, we support diverse sectors; just as we place a Cover Supervisor in schools, we place skilled trades on construction sites.
