As the Quantity Surveyor, you will be the financial cornerstone of the project. Your analytical skills and commercial acumen will be critical in ensuring projects are delivered on budget and to the highest standard. Your day-to-day duties will encompass a wide range of cost management activities.

• 1 Cost Planning & Estimating: Prepare accurate initial cost estimates, feasibility studies, and life-cycle costing for new build and refurbishment projects across Birmingham. This involves analysing drawings, specifications, and Bills of Quantities (BoQs) to forecast material, labour, and plant costs.
• 2 Contract Administration & Procurement: Manage the tender process, including preparing tender documentation, evaluating subcontractor quotes, and making recommendations for award. Administer contracts (e.g., JCT, NEC) to ensure all parties adhere to commercial obligations, assessing variations and managing change control procedures.
• 3 Valuation & Payment Management: Prepare and submit interim applications for payment, value completed works, and agree on valuations with client representatives. Process subcontractor payments, ensuring they are accurate, timely, and in line with agreed terms, maintaining positive supply chain relationships.
• 4 Cost Reporting & Forecasting: Produce regular, detailed cost reports for project managers and directors, highlighting budget status, forecast final cost (FFC), and any potential risks or overspends. Implement robust cost control measures to mitigate financial risk.
• 5 Final Account Settlement: Negotiate and agree on final accounts with clients and subcontractors, ensuring all variations, claims, and contra charges are resolved. This requires meticulous record-keeping, strong negotiation skills, and a thorough understanding of contractual entitlements.

• A Professional Qualification & Experience: A minimum of an HNC/HND in Quantity Surveying or a related field; a BSc (Hons) or RICS accreditation is highly desirable. You must have proven experience as a Quantity Surveyor, ideally within a main contracting or specialist subcontracting environment, with a solid portfolio of projects in the UK.
• B Technical & Software Proficiency: Expert knowledge of construction methods, materials, and costs. Must be highly proficient in industry-standard software such as CostX, Causeway, or similar measurement tools, alongside advanced skills in Microsoft Excel for financial modelling and reporting.
• C Commercial & Contractual Acumen: A thorough working knowledge of standard forms of contract (JCT, NEC). Demonstrable experience in procurement, subcontract management, and financial reporting. The ability to identify commercial risks and opportunities is paramount.
• D Personal Attributes: Excellent communication and negotiation skills, with the ability to build strong relationships with clients, site teams, and subcontractors. You must be self-motivated, highly organised, detail-oriented, and able to work under pressure to meet deadlines. A full UK driving licence is essential for site visits in the B40 area and beyond.
