Comprehensive Job Description: Site Cleaner, Edinburgh

Temporary Staff Agency is partnering with leading construction firms, facilities management companies, and commercial property owners in Edinburgh to recruit dedicated Site Cleaners. This role is critical for maintaining safety, professionalism, and operational efficiency on active work sites, from large-scale developments in the Quartermile to refurbishment projects on George Street.

As a Site Cleaner, you will be an integral part of the project team, ensuring that work areas are tidy, hazard-free, and compliant with stringent health and safety regulations. Unlike standard commercial cleaning, site cleaning requires adaptability, vigilance, and an understanding of a dynamic construction environment. Successful candidates will not only secure immediate work but will also be first in line for longer-term assignments and potential permanent positions with our esteemed client partners. We pride ourselves on connecting talented individuals with meaningful work. Our process is designed for speed and transparency, ensuring you understand the role, the site, and the expectations before your first shift. Whether you're an experienced site cleaner looking for your next challenge or someone with transferable skills seeking entry into this essential field, we want to hear from you.

Role Details & Requirements

Your Day-to-Day Duties as a Site Cleaner

Your primary objective is to ensure a clean, safe, and organised work environment for all site personnel. This involves a combination of routine tasks and responsive cleaning.

  • General Site Tidying: Daily sweeping, mopping, and dust removal from common areas, site offices, canteens, and walkways. This includes the collection and proper segregation of all waste materials into designated skips (general, recyclable, and hazardous).
  • Welfare Facility Management: Thorough cleaning, sanitising, and restocking of all toilet blocks, shower areas, and changing facilities multiple times per day to meet high hygiene standards.
  • Debris and Hazard Clearance: Proactive removal of packaging materials, off-cuts, and construction debris from workfaces and circulation routes to prevent trip hazards and maintain clear fire exits.
  • Specialist Cleaning Operations: Performing periodic deep cleans, such as window washing, high-level dusting, and pressure washing external areas, often using specialist equipment provided on-site after appropriate training.
  • Support for Other Trades: Assisting other trades where required, such as preparing areas for inspections by the client or Quality Control Inspector, or performing a final clean upon project handover.
  • Chemical Safety & COSHH Compliance: Safe handling, dilution, and application of industrial cleaning chemicals in accordance with COSHH regulations and site-specific risk assessments.
  • Reporting & Communication: Reporting any defects, damage, or supply shortages (toilet paper, soap) to the site supervisor and maintaining clear communication with the site management team.

What We're Looking For in a Candidate

We value reliability, a strong work ethic, and a safety-first attitude above all. Specific experience is beneficial, but we provide full induction and site-specific training for the right motivated individuals.

Essential Criteria

  • Proven reliability and excellent timekeeping.
  • Physical fitness and ability to perform manual handling tasks (lifting, bending, standing for long periods).
  • A strong understanding of, and commitment to, health and safety practices.
  • Ability to work both independently with minimal supervision and as part of a larger site team.
  • Right to work in the UK.

Desirable Experience & Skills

  • Previous experience in construction site cleaning, industrial cleaning, or as a Warehouse Operative / Picker Packer in a similar environment.
  • Valid CSCS card (or willingness to obtain one with our support).
  • Knowledge of COSHH and manual handling procedures.
  • Experience operating industrial cleaning machinery (scrubber-driers, pressure washers).
  • Own reliable transport for sites with limited public transport links.

While previous experience in construction site cleaning or a similar industrial environment is highly desirable, it is not always an absolute requirement. We value a strong work ethic, reliability, and a commitment to safety above all. For motivated individuals with transferable skills (e.g., from warehouse, factory, or commercial cleaning roles), we provide full site-specific induction and training. Your willingness to learn and follow procedures is key.

All necessary site-specific PPE is provided by the client or Temporary Staff Agency. This typically includes safety boots (which you may need to provide yourself, but we can advise on specifications), high-visibility clothing, hard hats, and gloves. For tasks involving chemicals or dust, additional equipment like goggles, masks, or respirators will be supplied. Your safety is our paramount concern, and no task should be performed without the correct PPE.

Our process is designed for speed to meet the urgent needs of our clients. If you have all your documentation ready (proof of right to work, address, etc.), and pass a straightforward interview, we can often complete registration within 24-48 hours. For roles with an"Immediate Start," successful candidates have been known to begin their first shift the very next day. The key is to be responsive to our consultant's calls and complete the online registration promptly.

Yes, absolutely. Many of our temporary assignments are used by clients as an extended interview process. Demonstrating reliability, a positive attitude, and high-quality work is the best way to be considered for a permanent position. We have a strong track record of placing temporary workers into permanent roles with our client partners. We call this our"Temp-to-Perm" pathway, and it's a core part of our service offering.

You will be paid weekly, one week in arrears, via BACS directly into your bank account. You submit your timesheet (usually electronically) at the end of each week. Once approved by the site supervisor and processed by our accounts team, payment is made. You will also accrue holiday pay in line with UK law, which you can request to be paid out. There are no fees or deductions from your pay – you receive the agreed hourly rate for all hours worked.
